Pretty much the subject says it all, SPI, aka JFD and Redmon Simonson kicked off and started a whole new movement in the late 60s and forged new ground in the 70s and into the 80s. Their imprint and impact is still felt today.
SPI was the movement and the heyday of wargaming. I have been to few conventions in the 2000s and the biggest was ASLOK, but that pales from some of the conventions from the mid to late 70s from what I have heard and read.
JFD is still alive and kicking, RS passed away as did RGB.

Dunnigan is indeed still alive and kicking. I saw a post from Mark Herman on Twitter a few days ago where he said he'd had lunch with JD the day before.
