Favourite games I played in 2024

Played Games

Favourite games I played doesn't mean they are brand new, or even new to me. Many of what I would call my favourite games won't be on this list just because I didn't get to play them this year. And what I really mean here, is the games I had the most fun with this year. Which definitely doesn't mean the same as if I ranked them from best game on down. I played a lot this year. This is 30 games I played and there's many more that didn't make it on the list. I had no idea I had so many different games played (especially considering all the plays of games on Rally The Troops that didn't make this list!).

This list is vaguely in order. Ask me tomorrow, and the rankings would be different. And if you want to see my video about the top ten, it's right after the list.

Leave your comments down below. Any of these resonate with you?

 Top Ten

1 Arabian Struggle -only one opposed play, but it left me desparate to play again
2 1812: Napoleon's Fateful March -same thing. Played it a bunch solo, but then it opened up completely opposed. Fantastic game
3 Advanced Squad Leader: Crossing the Moro HASL from Lone Canuck -I've always got two or three ASL PBEMs going, and this has been my favourite this year
4 A Greater Victory: South Mountain, September 14, 1862 -it's hard to pick just one, but at the moment, this is my fave Blind Swords game
5 The British Way: Counterinsurgency at the End of Empire -we played through the 4 scenarios and I was dissabused of the idea they might be too slight. Not at all. Intense
6 World War I: 1914-1918 (SPI) -easily my favourite unearthed gem from the deep past last year
7 Limits of Glory: Bonaparte's Eastern Empire -some very new mechanisms and widgets makes me want to follow this series
8 Eagles in the Sky -love this game, and I'm eager to play a campaign
9 Task Force -a hidden info game that can only be appreciated opposed, and then it's fantastic
10 Rise and Decline of the Third Reich -another oldie, one I hadn't played in 40 years. Loving it.

 Honourable Mentions

11 Combat Commander Europe -we finished CCE this year and have moved on to CC Med
12 Death in the Trenches: The Great War 1914-1918 (Second Edition) -it's a bit fiddly and lots of little exceptions, otherwise it would be in the top ten
13 Rommel in the Desert -perennial favourite that I get to play more often now it's on RTT
14 Storm over Arnhem -another oldie I got to play again
15 WWII Campaigns: 1942 -this was part of the reprint with 3 games in one box from Compass
16 Espana 1936 -I'll definitely be playing this more
17 Operation Theseus: Gazala 1942 - now I'm playing more of this system in the desert with their new Mirages quad
18 Dance of War (3 Crown Games) - my introduction to this publisher and their chit pull system
19 Gazala: The Cauldron - I'll play this any time
20 1812!: War on the Great Lakes Frontier - only one play opposed so I want to try out more scenarios
21 Kingmaker - not usually my thing, but had a terrific game at GMT West
22 Rebel Fury - the more I play this, the higher it will climb
23 Point Blank: V is for Victory - I never tire of trying new tactical systems
24 Death of an Army: Ypres 1914 - I enjoyed this, and apparently there is a new game in the system on the horizon
25 A Most Fearful Sacrifice: The Three Days of Gettysburg - It took a while to switch from Blind Swords mode into this, but I did enjoy it
26 France '40 - I'm a sucker for fall of France games
27 Frederick the Great: The Campaigns of The Soldier King 1756-1759 - this is on my table as I write this. I'm on my second scenario, have the rules down but strategy alludes me
28 The Hunt - great short game
29 Rommel's War (Worthington) - ditto, but in the desert
30 Brothers at War: 1862 - just one scenario so far, but looking to play more

Here's that video I promised:
