GMT Update January 2025

GMT Update January 2025

This month sees a whack of games shipped, and more shipping pricing news. I highlight what caught my eye, but there's also a link to the whole newsletter.

This month's newsletter starts off with a remembrance of Alan Emrich and a show of support for Rodger MacGowan. I've made my own announcements about these two events, so we'll move on to happier items.

Twilight Struggle has been inducted into the Boardgame Geek Hall of Fame. Makes perfect sense.

OK, not all happier news. More info about the constant rise in shipping costs. The one bright spot here is for my fellow Canadians. We now either have the choice of UPS shipping where the custom clearance fee (I think they charge about $11 this way) is built into the fee. Still, it's not cheap as a 1 lb package cost $48 and a 3 lb package cost $64. The only upside here is that they pre-pay the customs clearance fee as part of the price. If they just shipped it without that clearance pre-paid, UPS hits Canadians with a $70 fee to clear it through customs. And there is no customs or duties due, games and books are duty free (at least for now, can't count out how Mr. Trump may screw things up). Anyway, GMT has great news for Canadians in that they will now also ship here via USPS (which passes the parcel off to Canada Post). In this case, you will have to pay a customs clearance fee. I've had quite a few publishers ship this way, and the customs clearance fee varies with the value of the shipment. As far as I can tell, Canada post charges $9.95 as a clearance fee, and then GST on the value of the good shipped.

As GMT had mentioned last month, they are facing some tough sledding. To raise cash, they will be having a sale once the giant P500 lot is shipped. Probably coming late February, early January. Get yourself a deal or two and help keep GMT afloat. Win/win.

Rebel Fury is coming to Steam. And that means it will have an AI opponent, which is always the test of how good a computer game is.

1989

1989: DAWN OF FREEDOM is coming to Rally the Troops. Actually, I think it's already there.

There's a ton more in the newsletter, have a look if you want to see the whole thing.
